PURPOSE OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The wider program aims to enable trainees to acquire the practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide the most effective massage treatments to the public and to gain employment in the massage industry. This qualification is suitable for students aged 18 and over. 

OBJECTIVES OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Chapter 1 - Theory and Practice of Holistic Massage 

Unit 1:  The History of Massage

1.1   The word massage and its evolution until today 

Learners will be able to:

  • They explain the word massage 
  • They mention the historical review of massage until today (Ancient China, Japanese, India, Ancient Greece, Rome, Arabs, Per Henrik Ling, Physiotherapists and massage of today).

1.2   The Holistic Approach, Integrative Biology and Touch  

Learners will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of holistic treatment of the individual about holistic health 
  • Explain how the natural environment, social, economic and environmental factors affect health and social well-being 
  • Recognise the concept of balance and harmony in the body (homeostasis)
  • They recognise the benefits of touch from the day a person is born 
  • Name areas where touch is beneficial
  • State different aspects of touch and how it can stimulate or stop a response.

Section 2:  Consultation & Contraindications 

Learners will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of therapist and client consultation 
  • Explain and demonstrate the various consultation methods:

       - Medical History Information

       - Ways of use - Storage of Files 

       - Communication with the customer - Questioning techniques 

  • Define the word contraindications and explain the 2 types of contraindications 
  • Distinguish between common diseases that require medical permission or individual written consent and local/global contraindications.

Unit 3: The Application of a Holistic Massage

3.1 The Preparation of a Holistic Massage 

Learners will be able to:

  • They prepare the various spaces they will use (massage room, changing rooms/bathrooms). 
  • They choose the right equipment and the right atmosphere offering better comfort to the customer. 
  • Name the appropriate means of use for massage therapy and explain their advantages and effects. 
  • Explain and demonstrate appropriate client care during: 

- consultation - in the massage rooms - during the treatment - at the end of the treatment.

  • They explain why they may have likely reactions to the treatment and name them. 
  • Give appropriate post-treatment advice
  • Evaluate and review massage therapy

3.2.  Complementary Therapies 

Learners will be able to:

  • Describe other complementary therapies 
  • They explain how they are used 

3.3 The Effects of Massage (Physiology - Psychology, Organ Systems and Stress)

Learners will be able to:

  • They explain how massage affects people and the factors that differentiate massage  
  • Describe the short-term and long-term effects of massage
  • They name the systems of the human body that are directly and indirectly affected by massage therapy 
  • They explain the benefits of massage on each system of the body.
  • They name short-term - long-term effects of stress and its causes.

3.4 Posture 

Learners will be able to:

  • Recognise and explain the benefits of good posture 
  • They name the muscles that are responsible for correct body posture 
  • Recognise spinal deformities (kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis) and ways to improve
  • Name and describe body types and shapes

Unit 4: Holistic Massage Techniques 

Learners will be able to:

  • They define Swedish massage 
  • Name and classify massage movements/techniques
  • They explain each technique and how you perform it 
  • They choose when you should perform each technique
  • They recognise the benefits of each movement 
  • They perform massage techniques on the whole body
  • They adjust the movements of the massager based on his needs 
  • They feel qualified to perform massage therapy on a recipient

Studies of evidence containing:

  • 4 holistic body massage treatments for 3 clients and recording their results.

Final Exams

  • 50 multiple choice questions (theory) 
  • 45' Practical examination of the whole body 

Chapter 2 - Professional Conduct and Business Awareness

Unit 1: Principles of Ethical Practice

Learners will be able to:

  • They explain the importance of customer care 
  • Recognise and adopt a professional appearance 
  • They give examples of a professional massage therapist  
  • They create a good relationship with the customer
  • Define the importance of the client's modesty and state the reasons for using a towel 
  • They explain the concept of a "code of ethics" and give examples 
  • They mention the benefits of a professional link 
  • Explain and utilize professional indemnity insurance 
  • They define the term ``continuing professional development''

Unit 2: Layout of the Institute 

Learners will be able to:

  • They mention how to plan the layout of the interior workspace. (space, decoration, lighting, energy, walls, floor, staff facilities.)
  • They explain why the reception area is important and recognise the behaviour and duties of a receptionist 
  • They define the concept of "health and safety" at work
  • They explain the golden rule of health and safety legislation 
  • They recognise who is responsible for risk assessment in the workplace and distinguish hazard from risk 
  • They recognise by law the duties of employers and employees 
  • They explain why they should keep an accident book and be able to fill it out
  • Explain the influence of an advertisement and list the different methods of advertising 

Unit 3: Health, Safety and Hygiene

Learners will be able to:

  • They define the importance of hygiene 
  • Explain the types of infection (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites) 
  • Distinguish between sterilisation and disinfection methods and report their use 
  • They explain the advantages and disadvantages of sterilisation methods 
  • Recognise blood-borne diseases (AIDS, Hepatitis B) 
  • They name the list of basic materials that a first aid kit needs 
  • Treat emergencies such as fainting, burns, seizures, nosebleeds, dislocations, dizziness, bleeding, electric shock, objects in the eye
  • The types of firefighting equipment stand out

Unit 4: Setting up a Business 

Learners will be able to:

  • They recognize 4 business options and how they operate 
  • They compare the 3 types of businesses 
  • They explain the importance of inventory control systems 
  • They recognize how to cost a treatment 
  • They identify the aspects of a profitable business:
